12.7.16

Today is January 16th, 2017.

On another one of our unseasonably warm winter days, I ended up going to the foundation and taking some photos. I’ve always admired skate filmers, but had no idea how difficult skate photography is – especially on film cameras. Beyond have a beginners understanding of the technical workings of my camera, at the time these were taken I wasn’t aware of the best lighting for capturing portraits. By happenstance I was able to catch Brian with good shadows, but Josh’s sequence on the crooked grind is blown out.

In the future, I’m going to set up in a spot that doesn’t leave my subjects fully exposed in the sunlight, and to be sure and pick a vantage point that gives me a better overall layout with depth.

My favorite shot is of Kyle doing the backside 5-0, and I was using the zoom lens well beyond its default setting of 90mm. The others were taken with the lens focal length set at 90mm and possibly up to 120mm. I’ll have to explore the lens’ maximum distance (300mm) more though.

Today is January 6, 2017, and I went Uptown to take photos. One of the people who posed for me actually recognized me from the Keith Lamont Scott protests — good memory. He originally got my attention as he preached, “God loves you!” with a shirt emboldened with the same message in big block letters. I denied his claims of recognizing me, and his face shown that he knew I wasn’t interested in conversation. So, we went our separate ways. I’m not sure why I lied, but I should’ve spoken to him. I’m a beginner at street photography, and should be mindful of opportunities for conversation.

The small batch of photos below are from the second night of protests (September 22nd, 2016), where I followed protesters to witness first hand what was happening in the city I live in.
